In the Lean approach, Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is the tool for mapping the entire value stream within a business process, at the level of materials, processes and communications, allowing the identification of waste and areas for improvement. The application of this tool, also involves establishing the desired future state (Future State Map) and the definition of an improvement plan with specific KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) to be monitored for its achievement.
Value Stream Mapping thus enables a systematic focus on continuous efficiency in the production process, with a progressive reduction in so-called lead times.
