Italian Industry: In Search of Models

Italian industry is at a crucial crossroads. Technological acceleration and growing attention to sustainability are forcing companies to rethink their operating models, making the transition to the digital factory a necessary condition for competitiveness.

It is in this context that our new study, “What’s Next in Operations? Benchmarking Study,” fits in, as described in detail in Sibilla Di Palma’s article in La Repubblica.

Our research analyzed the maturity level of Italian industry across five key areas (operations, supply chain, sustainability, digitalization, and human resources), involving over 100 companies across 22 sectors.

The results of our benchmarking reveal a picture of strength and maturity across various strategic areas, but highlight a concerning digital divide.

Efficiency and sustainability at the top, digitalization at 48%

Bonfiglioli Consulting’s analysis confirms two pillars of excellence for the Italian industrial system:

  • Sustainability: The average maturity index stands at a remarkable 89%, confirming the country’s leadership position in this area.
  • Operations: With an average index of 71%, operational efficiency remains a strength.

However, the report issues a clear warning: digitalization remains the area with the greatest growth potential, but also the one lagging the most significantly.

The average digital maturity index is, in fact, only 48%. The La Repubblica article highlights, based on our data, that technological transformation is still in an intermediate phase.

Barriers to AI: Not Cost, but Organization

Our study has put the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) under the microscope. The data show that 55% of companies have not yet launched AI projects, and only 31% have established its use.

Contrary to what one might think, the main barriers are not economic but organizational. Limiting factors include:

  • A lack of internal expertise (skill gap).
  • Data quality.
  • The difficulty of integrating with legacy systems.

Digitization means not only introducing new technologies such as ERP and CRM, but also rethinking the entire value chain. Our Benchmarking Study, as highlighted by La Repubblica, is an essential tool to help companies measure this gap and chart a course toward a truly competitive and sustainable future.
