Realities and opportunities
The abundance of data generated by human activities is growing exponentially through technological development;
At the same pace, Data Science is emerging as the discipline that can extract valuable information from this data and is therefore an indispensable skill for companies that aspire to transform themselves into Data Driven Organizations;
Unlike more classical Data Analytics approaches, Data Science can produce predictive and prescriptive models of great value to companies;
Data Science is not "magic," however, and its application still requires skilled human supervision by Data Scientists; The figure of the Data Scientist encompasses a very broad spectrum of skills that can hardly be found in a single individual, which is why Data Science projects are preferably carried out in Teams.
The amount of data and information currently available is unprecedented in human history. Many of the objects, equipment and machinery we come into contact with in our daily lives, both work and family, automatically generate huge amounts of data; just think of smartphones and IoT-connected devices, but also of the sensor technology connected to industrial machines and plants. To stay in the industrial context, a recent survey by IDC, conducted on behalf of Seagate, showed that the growth in the amount of data generated by companies over the period 2020-2022 is estimated at a rate of 42% on an annual basis.
According to reports by Accenture and the World Economic Forum, if we instead consider the totality of data generated on our planet, we will produce 463 exabytes (463 million Terabytes) of data every day in 2025. As a comparison, consider that in 2009 the entire world's data storage capacity was 487 exabytes, a capacity that within a few years we will be able to saturate in just over a day!
